Honoring the Legacy of the Wedge Fairing: A Tribute to Bill Blackmore
In 2015, the motorcycle world was introduction to the fiberglass Wedge fairing by Bill Blackmore. Bill's inspiration for the Wedge fairing stemmed from his early experiences in the motorcycle industry and his passion for frame-mounted fairings. Reflecting on his journey, Bill has shared, "As a young man, I sold Hondas at a big dealership, and I was exposed to the 'Vetter' fairing at the same time." He observed how many of the Honda motorcycles he sold left the dealership with a Vetter fairing installed, sparking his interest in frame-mounted fairings.
Bill's preference for frame-mounted fairings was rooted in their stability and comfort on the road. However, when he had purchased a second-hand FXRT fitted with what he described as "the ugliest fairing" he had ever seen, he knew he needed to make a change. Determined to improve both the aesthetics and functionality of his ride, Bill had took matters into his own hands and crafted a fairing from fiberglass for the FXR.
As Bill rode with his custom fairing, he had noticed a common reaction from fellow riders – they were intrigued and eager to know where they could get one for themselves. This overwhelming response sparked the idea for what would become known as the Wedge fairing. Bill had recognized the demand for a frame-mounted fairing that offered not only stability but also enhanced wind protection, storage, audio options and more!
Bill's dedication and commitment to quality were evident in every aspect of the Wedge fairing, making it a beloved accessory among motorcycle enthusiasts.
Tragically, Bill Blackmore has recently passed, leaving behind a legacy to the motorcycle community. However, his spirit lives on through the Wedge Fairing and the impact it has had on mid-size bike riders around the world!
Brian and Bill shared a bond that extended far beyond their mutual passion for motorcycles – they were good friends. Their connection began through the Hamsters, a tight-knit group of motorcycle nuts, where they bonded over their shared love for custom motorcycles, parts and more. Over the years, their friendship flourished as they navigated the motorcycle industry and countless not paved parking lots of rallies.
Their friendship was built on a foundation of mutual respect and admiration for each other's work. Brian admired Bill's innovative spirit and dedication to pushing the boundaries of motorcycle fairing designs, while Bill respected Brian's expertise and commitment to excellence in every aspect of his craft, even though Bill though Brian was a little hard headed.
